…we have one more very special guest. The author of BLEACH, TITE KUBO-Sensei! I'm TITE KUBO. Thanks for having me today. It's been quite a while since KUBO-Senseilast appeared on JUMP FESTIVAL. Right, it's been a while.[Last time was two years ago!] KUBO-Sensei, so the Thousand-Year Blood WarArc has finally begun. What are your thoughts on that now? I feel relieved. We had been preparing this for many years.
And finally we were able to shape it intosomething we can present to the world. So, I'm relieved. You're relieved, that's what first came into your mind? We can only imagine how much workwent into preparing this. So, let's talk about the charms ofthe Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. We had everyone choose their “My Best Scene”out of the scenes that have been aired. We will watch the scene, and hear yourthoughts on why you chose the scene. First, let's start with MORITA-san. This is the scene I chose.
Okay then… For me, it's… the last episode, 366, of the first series… …ended with the line, “See you guys…”, and this series beginning with “Okay then…”is very likely of ICHIGO. – It's not, “I'm back”.- Right! “I'm back” may be a little odd. No, but for ICHIGO it may be connected. It starts with “Okay then…”.
– And that BGM, it's like, “Oooh, it's starting again!”- That's right! – It's great that it starts off with “Number One”.- Yes, it's very good. They really finished up this scene nicely. – Finished it up nicely!- I really thought it was awesome. KUBO-Sensei, this scene is a little differentfrom the original manga, isn't it? Oh, yes, it is. – It's a new scene for the anime?- Well… I think the Bankai is simply a bonus shotfrom the director. Oh, so like, let's go at it from the start.
That one's not my idea! But actually, the director, and… the anime team give me a lot of suggestions. And they are, well, they're really thinkingabout the fans. Here and there, that are comical…comedy scenes, and the moment I did that with ICHIGO for thefirst time in a while, – I thought, this sort of vibe is also BLEACH.- Yes, I agree. Next, we have OKIAYU-san's “My Best Scene”. This is the scene I chose as “My Best Scene”! In this first run, BYAKUYA didn't have many scenes, but the first battle was pretty intense. (Bankai… Senbonzakura Kageyoshi.) – I just want everyone to watch my highlight scene.- Your highlight scene!.

Sorry, but really!! – That perfect BYAKUYA-sama being…- She's a precious representative of the fans! …put in such a state…I was so devastatedback then, when I read that page. I understand, I was shocked when I readthat page in the manga, too. I was so shocked that I closed the bookfor a moment. So, we watched the etherial and beautiful scene. And actually, TITE KUBO-Sensei also chosehis “My Best Scene”, let's watch his choice.

– This is scary…- This is the one I wanted to see the most. What… What the hell… …is this?! This is… Kakajumanokushidaisojin. – We couldn't take our eyes off of that.- Totally. Could you tell us why you chose this scene? Yes. I simply enjoyed drawing this sceneduring the series.
A middle-aged man and an old man werefighting for weeks on SHONEN JUMP, I was wondering if that was okay whenI was working on it. Also, I had come up with GENRYUSAI'sBankai and moves a long time ago, and I wanted to draw it, so I was finally able to bring that out. Also, the director told me he willreally put his efforts into this scene, so I was looking forward to watching it. – This scene was just shocking.- It really was. – I always wanted to see Old Man Yama's Bankai.- Everyone did.
And wanted to see him fight. And when he did, it was like,wow, he is extremely powerful! Like, oh, Thousand-Year Blood War Arcmust be ending soon. Yes, his power had such great impact. I thought, oh, YHWACH is dead!We got this guy! Then, that unexpected outcome…happens. For me, a fan of Old Man Yama,it was too shocking. I thought, what have you done, Sensei?! And for this anime, the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc,.
KUBO-Sensei is not only the author of the originalmanga, but but also the General Supervisor, and he supervised original scenes for the animethat are not in the original manga. Let's look at a few of those original scenes. Bankai… Koko Gongyo Rikyu. It was a magnificent Bankai. He wasn't able to defeat me, but… His Bankai left a permanent scar …on my forehead.
Originally, this CHOJIRO SASAKIBE's Bankaiwas not created for the anime. There's an app game of BLEACH calledBLEACH Brave Souls, and in it, when the character appears, they couldn't make KOKO GONGYO RIKYUinto a movie, so they asked me how this Bankai works. So, I drew illustrations and gave it to them. – So, that finally came out in this anime.- Yes, as a movie. Wow…the viewers of the anime werealso surprised, because it was new to them. We could finally see what that Bankai was like,.
And how he got the scar. Sensei also told us a scene he looked forwardto seeing in the anime, which is this scene. This…it hurts to say “looking forward to”this scene… Bankai. [BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War ArcDirector TOMOHISA TAGUCHI] [We have interviewed director TAGUCHIfor some more exclusive info on the anime!].
[How did you feel when you became directorof the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc?] It's a series with a history, sort of,it's been running for a long period of time, and I was also a fan of the manga myself, so I wasn't sure if I could direct sucha distinguished series. [What is your “My Best Scene”?] In Episode 7, where ICHIGO becomes infuriatedafter BYAKUYA is beaten. Raindrops fall onto ICHIGO, which is actually ICHIGO's Spiritual Pressure, and they gradually evaporate…
…and the evaporated mist wrap aroundICHIGO's body. While recreating the cut from the original manga, we were able to successfully interpret thatinto animation effects, so that was a memorable scene. [Do you have any memorable episodesfrom your meetings with KUBO-Sensei?] He said that I could aggressively cut the gag scenes, and that sort of surprised me. He said, if the gag makes the tempo of theanime bad, you can cut it. Because when the drama is serious,.
Sometimes it's difficult to slip in those gags… and that KUBO-Sensei himself told me thatI can cut those gags, really left an impression, although it wasat one of our very first meetings. [Is there anything you would like to askthe voice actors?] MORITA-san's passion towards BLEACHis something exceptional. He's always screaming it out from the test rehearsals. But there was a time when KUBO-Sensei,MORITA-san and I did a talk session together, and he said that he still wasn't going full-on. And I thought, oh, that still isn't him going full-on…?!.
I'm doing it seriously! I said, I'm not puttingmy full spirit into it. Like, when I'm shouting Bankai or Getsugatensho. MORITA-san, when can we see you go full-onon ICHIGO, or full-on on Getsugatensho? I'm looking forward to seeing it, as a director! Um, everyone watching, make no mistake,I'm putting my best into it! Stop it, please. This is totally misleading… What, are you slacking it?.

In this box are questions we had you submit. Maybe questions you normally couldn't ask,but would like to take this opportunity to. What if there were complaints, like, I alwaysthought you were so and so… The first one is a question from ITO-san.
Although we had recordings for games, we hadquite a blank for the recordings for the anime. Did you do something in particular to preparefor the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc recordings? Did you feel this blank when you acted yourcharacter? Or did you not? – SUGIYAMA-san, would you like to answer this?- Sure. I reread the manga, and the Thousand-YearBlood War Arc, of course, but… …there isn't a big time lapse from the last seasonto the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc, so I tried not to make my characterunnaturally young. But when I actually heard everyones voiceson the day of the test rehearsals, I didn't have to worry about any of that,I could just,.
Act along with how I was feeling duringthe past series. I also talked about this in magazine interviews,but it was a very peculiar feeling. I tried to leave behind my excitement ofrestarting the series when going to the studio. That's interesting. I tried to leave that aside.And made sure I wasn't too conscious. Because that was just a feeling thatI developed personally. So, for me it was like shedding those feelingsand walking in there just as myself. Then, this sort of connects to what SUGIYAMA-sanwas saying, but… …when we got together, things naturally fellinto place, where they should be.
– That's wonderful. – Excellent. Everyone's answers were right to the point, and… …with the first question, I successfully createdthis serious atmosphere…! The next one is a question from SUGIYAMA-san. Let's see, in the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc,there are many colorful reactions by ICHIGO. What scene do you recall when you thinkabout his reactions to a comical line? Well, even though some scenes were cut in the anime, are there any scenes that you want to reflecton in particular? – The scene where we take a bath.- Ah, yes, that one.
In the bath scene, there was one part thatwas edited out of the script. I really wanted to say that line, so even though it wasn't on the script,I threw it in there. – Can we see this scene?- I would like everyone to look for that scene. – I see.- I'm fighting my way through the recordings. But this time, it's true, as Sensei said earlier, if it will ruin the rhythm of the story, thegag scenes could be edited out. I really liked those scenes where ICHIGOhas a blank face, so there are many moments where I wishyou didn't edit out!.
I understand that really well. When those scenes are entirely edited out,I get extremely shocked. I think, oh, I really wanted to do this scene! So, I've done it several times, saying linesthat were edited out of the script. Lines from the original manga, yes… And, sometimes I succeed, sometimes I'm totally edited out. But I think I need to try it at least once! – Because maybe they might think it's actually good.- Exactly!.
So there are scenes where I fought my way throughin the recording studio. Especially for the gag scenes, I really wantto do his reactions. But recently, sometimes the gag scene Iwant to do is entirely edited out. And when I try to throw it back in there,they don't even have any space for me to do that. – I think they're taking countermeasures.- If you leave a space, MORITA-san will add a line! Make sure there's no space! He adds lines at moments where there'sno space at all! But that's MORITA-san expressing his feelingsfor scenes that he didn't want to be cut, right? I'm hoping they might add pictures later…
…I'm thinking that far ahead, but recently,they don't even leave me any space to do that! The tempo is getting tighter and tighter…They're taking countermeasures! – So, that intense battle is ongoing.- Yes, I'm fighting my way through it. But, I'd like to hear more from KUBO-Senseias well. Yes, there's a question for him, too. Thousand-Year Blood War Arc is long, butwhat sort of direction do you want to take… using the potentials of anime expressions? Like the earlier CHOJIRO TADAOKI SASAKIBE scene, – will you be adding new scenes?- That, I'll probably be doing.
And there are things that we couldn't expressbefore, but now can with this anime, so do you have plans on scenes that youmay be able to add using these new possibilities? – I do, yes.- You do?! – Yes.- You do! …Are you sure?! – You're saying it like, “Final Answer?”- Guys, he has plans!! Yeah!! Oh, really?! Well, yes, but there still are scenesthat we will not show. – Hmm.- Like in the earlier scene, UNOHANA vs KENPACHI, UNOHANA has her own background storyof how she grew up,.
How she joined the Squad, and picked upfighting with the sword. But if we insert that episode there, the storystrays off to the side, so we chose to leave that out, and onlyshowed a little of her time with KENPACHI. There are many similar…but will weshow UNOHANA's past somewhere…? I don't think we will… In the original manga, she was just labeled as thegreatest villain in the history of Soul Society. Her story of when she was a villain is never told. Also, why this greatest villain became a memberof the original Thirteen Court Guard Squad… …was never told, and as fans, we wouldreally like to find out, but…
…you will be…adding that…? We don't plan on telling that story in the anime,so far. I see…I see…you are stubborn. There is a saying, “If it is hidden, it is the Flower.”I really like this idea. That is from the book on Noh, The Flowering Spirit. That is the motto of my work. What a tricky answer…! Those background stories of, say, ZARAKI,at what point do you come up with them? Does it all come at once, as you start drawingthe character?.
Yeah, they come out one after another whenI am drawing the character. And they keep coming out when I amthinking about the character. There are bits and pieces of images in my head, then, later I notice, like, oh, this image is aboutthis character, – as I draw the characters.- Whoa. MORITA-san, where did that voice come from? First, from the final episode of the first runof the anime, which will be aired Dec. 26… …as a 60 min. special episode, we havea new official poster image. I was simply a fan of the series. Even before the theatre performance, I'd thoughtof writing a letter to FURUDATE-Sensei, asking him to cast me if this was ever going tobe made into a movie. That is so pure of you! I had a draft I was working on, on my iPhone. Like, “My favorite character is KUROO…” – Though many characters appear after him, still!- “…but my No.1 character is HINATA”. That is how much I wanted to be a part ofHAIKYU!! as an actor, to begin with. When I graduated from my role, I was actuallyable to hand my drafted letter to FURUDATE-Sensei.
That was really, it may be weird to say this myself,but a dramatic outcome. – So, Theatre HAIKYU!! meant a lot to you?- Definitely. It was really like a club itself, practicing frommorning to night, eating together, discussing how tomake things better together, sometimes getting into small fights… I was able to experience the intensity of creatingone piece together as a group through HAIKYU!!, so HAIKYU!! actually became somethinglike a bloom of youth itself for me. I've heard from the staff about how muchrice they cook. Yeah, there aren't many rehearsals wherethey cook rice.
I've never seen a rehearsal studio withrice cookers lined up side by side. Three rice cookers. After lunch break, the rehearsal studio is likea clubroom. Everyone… …eats, like, rice, and kimchi, and natto, so… …the smell is all mixed up, and… I ask what they want as a treat, and they say,”Rice toppings…maybe…” “You want rice toppings?” They're like, “We want to try something newon our rice.” – It's not something you hear often in rehearsals.- But it's also because…
The company consisted of about20-30 hungry boys in their early 20s. Another interesting thing is, after our final performance,the KARASUNO team went out to eat together. Then, before I know it, they're all like… “You could've done that scene better ifyou had done it like so and so.” – They're giving each other notes?- They were. We finished the final performance, so we'llnever do it again. “We should do that scene a little more like this.” They're pointing out each other's potentials.
And then, they're like, “Oh, we're not gonnado this anymore…” They're like, obsessed with theatre.Something similar to the characters HAIKYU!! They were probably doing something like thatthrough volleyball everyday. And that we were able to do something similar,improving through friendly rivalry in theatre, maybe that is what moved my heart the mostthrough this entire experience. So, there were many theatre productionsof HAIKYU!! in the past, but… …SUGA-san, who has so much love for HAIKYU!!… …will be the director of a new project,GEKIDAN HAIKYU!! starting in 2023. This is going to be my debut as a director,.
And as it is my director debut, everything isa first for me. I'm already doing some meetings for this project, but it's really like, oh, so this is howa production is created. Of course I had participated as an actor before, but the timing we join the project is actuallyat the very end. After various things are set in place, and all that's left is creating the piece,that's when we actors join the team. So, it's really like, so many things are beingdecided bit by bit…I sound like an amateur. So, performing as a cast and directing,they are totally different things, right?.
Totally different! Really! Well, but it's all going to begin next year.The rehearsals haven't begun yet, and we will be making many of the decisionsthrough the rehearsals. But I really feel… and I felt this since I played HINATA forTheatre HAIKYU!!, but… I think HAIKYU!! is a piece that reallyworks well with Theatre. Like, how we get emotional, then thatgets the audience emotional… …is really one great charm of HAIKYU!!, andalso a great charm of Theatre. So, I think that is something we can deliverthrough HAIKYU!! in the Theatres.
I will keep that in mind whendirecting this new production. I wonder how…maybe I shouldn't say this,but I have no idea how this will turn out, too. He's telling the truth.
